What is Spirituality?

Spirituality, in its broadest sense, could be a way of searching for meaning (or purpose) that goes beyond the individual. At the same time, it's also deeply personal and unique to each person. In general, spirituality includes two key concepts:

● A yearning to connect with something larger than ourselves – a quest for Meaning (with a capital M)

● The belief that we are all connected – recognising that what ties us to our concept of a higher power also links us to one another.(1)

Generally, people who are spiritual seek to understand the meaning of life and their place in it. They look for answers in nature, art, literature, meditation, yoga, and other activities that bring them closer to a higher power or consciousness.

In short, Clarity Yoga Shala believes spirituality is about inner growth and transformation.

Thus incorporating spirituality consciously into daily life could improve its experience, regardless of religious beliefs. Some people find that when they become more spiritually connected, they open up to new opportunities and possibilities –rather than the limitations of probabilities.

What is Religion, and how does it relate to spirituality?

Religion is a set of beliefs, traditions, and practices related to one's relationship with the divine. It usually involves worshiping a deity or deities, praying and attending religious services, reading sacred texts, and observing rituals.

Religion can be closely linked to spirituality, but they are not the same thing. Religion is usually structured and organized, while spirituality is more open-ended and often personal.

Religion typically involves specific beliefs, laws, and practices that are intended to bring adherents closer to the divine or their understanding of it. Spirituality can be a way for people to practice faith without having to it adhere to rigid religious rules and structures.

Religion may provide some guidance on the spiritual journey, however Clarity Yoga Shala believes it's important to remember that you don't need to adhere to one religion in order to be spiritual. All you need is an open heart and mind.

Let's take a closer look at what all the religions have to say about "Spirituality"

- Spirituality in Buddhism

Buddhism emphasizes the importance of compassion and mindful awareness. It teaches that the key to spiritual growth is developing an inner sense of peace, compassion, and understanding.

Buddhists believe that when we practice mindfulness, we can reach a state of enlightenment in which we are free from suffering and able to find true happiness. Through meditation and other practices, we can learn to be aware of the present moment and let go of our attachments to material things. (2)

- Spirituality in Christianity

Christianity is focused on developing a relationship with God. It teaches that the path to spiritual growth is paved by faith and love–being faithful to God, loving one another, and following Christ's teachings.

By practicing self-reflection and incorporating spiritual practices like prayer into our daily lives, we can come closer to understanding our place in God's plan.

- Spirituality in Hinduism

In Hinduism, spirituality is closely linked with self-realization or union with Brahman, the divine force that pervades all of existence. Hindus believe that by walking the path of devotion and knowledge, we can transcend our physical limitations and reach spiritual liberation.

The goal is to achieve moksha or liberation from suffering by deeply connecting with the divine. (3)

- Spirituality in Islam

In Islam, spirituality is about understanding the will of Allah and following His guidance.

The three main components to Islamic spirituality are cleansing the mind, body and soul, always keeping Allah in one's thoughts, and communicating with him through prayer.

It could be argued that the three elements go hand-in-hand. In other words, if you cleanse your soul, you will more than likely have the remembrance of God. The relationship between having a purified soul and remembering God is strong.

And if these two things are met, then as a result, you will pray to God truthfully and wholeheartedly. (4)

No matter what your religious beliefs are, it can be said that spirituality can be a powerful tool for becoming a better person and living a more fulfilling life. By cultivating an open heart and mind and engaging in spiritual practices like meditation, prayer, and self-reflection, we can gain a better understanding of ourselves and our relationship with the divine. Through this understanding, we can strive to become better people who are kinder, more compassionate, and more loving.

How can being spiritual make you a better person?

Spirituality can be beneficial in many ways, such as providing comfort and guidance when times are tough. It also has the power to help us become better people by increasing our self-awareness, encouraging us to be kinder to ourselves, and helping us make decisions from a place of love rather than fear.

Spirituality can help us become better people by encouraging us to take a step back and gain perspective on the world. When we open ourselves up to spiritual teachings, we often find that life isn't as chaotic or unfair as it may seem. We learn to let go of toxic attachments and appreciate the small moments in life.

Additionally, spirituality encourages us to practice gratitude, compassion, and understanding. We learn to accept our flaws and embrace our strengths. And ultimately, we become kinder and more accepting of ourselves and others.
